Competition Rules and Regulations for Competitors

  • Category Rules
  • No pets are allowed in the pavilions. Registered service animals must have current certification papers and be produced when requested.
  • No exhibit will be entitled to space or considered in the judging until proper on-line entry has been made.
  • No entry fees will be charged 2022 (the inaugural year of the Electric City Flower Show).
  • No prize money will be awarded 2022.
  • The organizers will have full authority over allocation of space.
  • All entries must be made in the name of the grower, or the individual arranging/growing the exhibit.
  • All exhibits will be numbered, recorded, and an entry tag issued. This tag will be securely attached to the exhibit by the organizers and must remain on the exhibit throughout the show.
  • It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to ensure exhibits are clearly labeled with correct competition category on the entry tag. The organizers assume no responsibility for the incorrect tagging of, or removal of the tag from the exhibits.
  • A claim tag with corresponding number will be issued to the exhibitor.
  • Adult exhibits must be delivered to the Marmi Pavilion between 8:00am 9:00am Saturday August 6, 2022.
  • ‘Children’s Entries’ to be delivered to the Everhart Pavilion between 8:00am 9:00am Saturday August 6, 2022.
  • Exhibits will be placed by the organizers.
  • Exhibitors and general public are not allowed within the pavilions before 10:00am Saturday August 6, 2022.
  • Judging commences promptly at 9:00am Saturday August 6, 2022.
  • Judges must not be approached or questioned during judging.
  • Judging commences promptly at 9:00am and will be completed by 10:00am Saturday August 6, 2022.
  • Entries made in wrong category may be moved to the proper class by the organizer prior to the commencement of judging.
  • To qualify for Children’s Entries, competitors must be within the age range for elementary or middle school. There are no other age restrictions.
  • Adult competitors may enter multiple exhibits, however, in the categories 1 (one) through 4 (four) the exhibits must be of different in color and/or variety.
  • All of the flowers must be grown by the competitor, with the exception of those used in the Mason jar flower arrangements.
  • No artificial or dried flowers and foliage are allowed in any category.
  • Exhibitors must use their own glassware/vase with no visible advertising or decorations (exception being a beverage bottle or jar).
  • All reasonable care will be given to all exhibits to prevent theft and/or damage, however, exhibits are entered at the competitor’s risk. Every effort will be made but the organizers, volunteers, and security detail, assume no responsibility for the loss of personal property of the exhibitors at any time.
  • The following will be disqualified and removed at the discretion of the organizers: (i) unsightly exhibits that do not reflect the standards and integrity of the Electric City Flower Show, (ii) designs or arrangements that feature controversial or offensive subject matter, e.g. guns or weapons, (iii) any exhibit determined to be a hazard to other exhibits due to insect or disease. The organizer’s opinion and decision is final.
  • Judging will be completed by 10:00am
  • Only one first place (blue) ribbon, and one second place (red) ribbon, will be awarded per category. Judges retain the right to withhold awards.
  • All entries receiving a first place award, including Children’s Entries, are eligible for the Best in Show, and one (1) Best in Show rosette (purple) will be awarded.
  • Immediately following the Electric City Flower Show Best in Show award, the awards for Scranton in Bloom competition will be made.
  • After all awards are made, judges will not offer opinions or give reasons for their decisions about the qualities of the exhibits unless requested to do so.
  • Entries remain on display for the entirety of the show.
  • Removal of exhibits before the date and time specified will be cause for forfeit of all awards won and exclusion from subsequent Electric City Flower Show(s).
  • Claim tag is required to claim exhibits after the show. If the claim tag is lost it will be necessary for the exhibitor to provide proof of identity.
  • Exhibits must be claimed on Saturday August 6, 2022, after 4:00pm
  • Exhibits not claimed by 5:00pm, Saturday August 6, 2022, will be considered donated to Petals for Goodness Sake, for distribution to Scranton nursing homes, hospice units, and senior living centers.
  • Complaints and suggestions must be submitted to the organizers either directly during the show, or by email electriccityflowershow@gmail.com
  • Photographs and videos of exhibits and winners will be taken by official photographers of the Electric City Flower Show.
  • By entering the Electric City Flower Show, competitors hereby grant permission for those photographs, images, or likenesses, in whole or in part, to be used in publications and future promotions.

Important!  The Judge’s decisions in all matters ARE FINAL.

Nay Aug Park and the City of Scranton, their staff, affiliates, advertisers, and their sponsors are not liable or responsible for: (i) any claims, damages, losses, injuries, or death including any third party claims, arising from or relating to, in whole or in part, any contest, including entry and participation in any contest and acceptance, possession, use or misuse of the prizes (ii) any technical or human errors, malfunctions, failures, etc. resulting in participation of contests.

 

Categories

Category 1 – Cut Flowers Perennials, 1 Stem

Category 2 – Cut Flowers Perennials, 3 Stem (identical or ‘stages of bloom’)

  • Single flower to be shown in a simple bud vase or similar bottle.
  • 3 stem entries to be displayed in one vase or bottle.
  • Competitors may submit multiple entries of different colors and varieties.
  • Perennials to include (but not exclusively) e.g. aster, chrysanthemum, columbine, dahlia, day lily, foxglove, hibiscus, hydrangea, rose.
  • Organizers will have final decision as to whether a flower is an annual or a perennial in Pennsylvania (zones 5a through 7b).

Category 3 – Cut Flowers Annuals, 1 Stem

Category 4 – Cut Flowers Annuals, 3 Stems (identical or ‘stages of bloom’)

  • Single flower to be shown in a simple bud vase or similar bottle.
  • 3 stem entries to be displayed in one vase or bottle.
  • Competitors may submit multiple entries of different colors and varieties.
  • Annuals to include (but not exclusively) e.g. begonia, cosmos, fuchsia, geranium, impatiens, marigold, nasturtium, salvia, sunflower, zinnia. Organizers will have final decision as to whether a flower is an annual or a perennial in Pennsylvania (zones 5a through 7b).

Category 5 – Mason Jar ‘Posy’ Arrangement

  • Exhibit must be arranged in a clear glass, wide mouth 32 oz (1 quart) Ball/Mason Jar.
  • Water must be clear and without coloring/dye.
  • Freshly cut material only may be used in the arrangement.
  • Flowers and foliage do not have to be grown by exhibitor.
  • No dyed, painted, lacquered, or otherwise treated material is permitted in the floral arrangement.
  • No fresh plant material is to be treated in any way, e.g. vegetable oil, leaf shine.
  • No fruit or berries, either fresh or dried.
  • No backgrounds, soft underlay or tags are allowed.
  • Majority of the Mason Jar must be clearly visible, but minimal decoration at the neck is allowed, e.g. ribbon, string, raffia.
  • There is no height restriction but exhibit must be self-supported (without weights/stones in the jar) and deemed stable.

Category 6 – Creative Container

  • Recycled/repurposed objects only are to be used as containers.
  • Exhibit to be displayed on the ground.
  • Planter can be of any material, any shape, with no visible advertising.
  • Flowering plants and foliage plants only, no shrubs or trees.
  • No additional decorative items, either natural or man-made.
  • Supports are allowed, e.g. trellis, stakes.
  • No size or weight restrictions but the competitor will not receive any assistance from the organizers, and is responsible for the movement, placement, and removal of their exhibit.

Category 7 – Window Box/Planter

  • Where possible (and safe to do so), window box and small exhibits will be displayed raised, on the pavilion walls or tables.
  • All other entries will be displayed on the ground.
  • Window box maximum 30” length.
  • No visible advertising.
  • Flowering plants and foliage plants only, no perennials.
  • No decorative items inside the planter, either natural or man-made.
  • No supports, e.g. trellis, stakes.
  • Planters specifically for deck rails are allowed if they are free-standing.
  • Planters containing individual plants still in pots are not allowed.

Category 8 – Hanging Basket

  • Maximum 14” diameter basket
  • Maximum 15lb weight.
  • Flowering plants and foliage plants only, no perennials.
  • No man-made decorative items inside, or hanging from, the basket.
  • No visible advertising.
  • Every effort will be made to hang the baskets in and around the pavilions and bandstand. The alternative is to display on a tabletop. The exhibitor can supply a suitable ‘shepherd’s hook’. However, the organizers, volunteers, and security detail, assume no responsibility for the loss of personal property of the exhibitors at any time.

Category 9 – Children’s Entries, Fairy Garden

  • 1 (one) entry per child.
  • The entry must be the work of the competitor.
  • Age of the competitor must be stated.
  • Must fit in a base area 18” x 18”
  • Outer container can be recycled or store-bought and alterations are allowed.
  • Purpose-made, store bought ‘Fairy Garden’ containers are discouraged.
  • No height restriction, but the garden must be stable and self-supporting.
  • Components and decorations can be made of recycled, repurposed, natural, or synthetic materials.
  • Store-bought miniature items, e.g. figures, houses, furniture, decorations, models etc. are discouraged.
  • Battery-powered, scale appropriate lighting is allowed.
  • Mirrors and glass materials are allowed in place of water, i.e. representing ponds & streams.
  • If the garden does not comply with these aforementioned rules, or the judge deems that the quality of the work is not age appropriate, the exhibit will not be noted as disqualified, or removed, but it will not be considered eligible for judging within the competition.
  • All Children’s Entries will receive a ‘Participation’ ribbon.

Category 10 – Children’s Entries, Largest Sunflower (diameter of head)

The world record was set in 1983 at 32.25". We will be calling the Guinness Book of World Records if we beat this!

  • 1 (one) entry per child.
  • A single flower is to be displayed in a stable vase or bottle no wider than the diameter of the sunflower.
  • Dried seed-heads will not be accepted.
  • The sunflower seed-head will be measured at its widest point.
  • The starting and finishing points will be where the brown seed-head meets the base of the petal, i.e. the measurement DOES NOT include petals.
  • A soft tape will be used and will follow the curved contour of the seed-head.
  • In the event of a draw, petals will be included.
  • Creative display methods that personalize the sunflower are encouraged, e.g. hats, sunglasses.
  • All Children’s Entries will receive a ‘Participation’ ribbon.
